One that I recommend you read for guidelines on what attitudes to avoid is Missed Fortune by Douglas Andrew. His philosophy is that house values always go up, so buy a house, keep your monthly payments low for as long as possible, and invest the money you "save" from not spending money on your mortgage in something with a high rate of return. Genius (not!). If I were him I'd be in hiding until the economy turns around.
